The Cat Master of the Sea
Every time I get on a boat, I instantaneously leave all the day-to-day stress behind. On a sailing boat, everything slows down. You have to adapt yourself to the rhythm of the waves. When there is no wind, you might even have to stop completely – certainly ideal conditions to unwind, slow down and get away from it all. Not to mention the relaxing effect of the steady sound of the waves and the view of the infinite expanse of the sea. All this takes you far away from your daily routine, thus many people return from a one-week sailing trip as relaxed as if they had been on holidays for a whole month. Besides, you can enjoy different landscapes every day, but this does not involve changing hotels and constantly packing and unpacking your suitcase, as you’ve got everything with you. Last but not least, sailing holidays offer a lot of opportunity for romance: you can cruise along at you own speed and moor when it pleases you, the open sea around gives me a feeling of freedom, and could you imagine anything more romantic than sleeping under the stars while being softly rocked by the waves? There is no other place where you can experience the sea with such intensity, where you can feel as close to nature as on a sailing boat.
When it comes to boats, there is a wide variety of choice. The most obvious distinction is between monohulls and catamarans. Much has been written about monohulls, so we will focus on the features of a catamaran. Because of the double hull, catamarans are more stable than normal sailing boats. Thus, even with rough sea conditions, you are less likely to get seasick, objects stay where they are, and you can move around without great difficulty. Thanks to their special layout, catamarans are not only particularly stable but also very fast. A catamaran allows you to glide through the waves with surprising velocity and the reduced gauge means you can also stop in shallow water. Hence the catamaran is ideal to get into secluded bays where you can enjoy a swim far away from the masses.
A week on a catamaran is no compromise in terms of comfort: it is basically like a house on water;
you get all the comfort of home in the midst of the ocean and you don’t have to put up with the camping feeling you would normally encounter on many monohulls. The Dixons, who have chartered a Voyage catamaran each year for the last five, comment: “We get all the comfort of home, it’s not like camping which you tend to get on monohulls. The 44 foot is just perfect for a group of six friends – lots of space and you never feel claustrophobic.” Voyage operated catamarans are considered first choice if you go for a catamaran. As Linda Ryan, an enthusiastic sailor, puts it: “The Voyage catamaran is the ‘rolls’ of double hulls.
Top of my shopping list if I won the lottery, is a 44 Foot catamaran from Voyage.” Well, why not, it has the space of an apartment with first line view of the sea and you can change the landscape any day you wish. Voyage catamarans are fitted with all the extras and space to dream of. They usually have four spacious double cabins and four bathrooms, and the galley is fitted with all modern conveniences, including an enormous fridge, a microwave and leather seating.
The decks offer lots of sun bathing opportunity, especially the net joining the two hulls, which is perfect to take a siesta after lunch and top up the tan. The attentive Voyage crew think of every detail: champagne and hors d’oeuvre when you arrive on board, and the extensive buffet is fit for kings. They provide flowers, fresh fruit and board games. The service is friendly without being intrusive. And don’t worry that you will ever get bored. “Toys” for all ages are provided:
fishing rods, diving and snorkelling gear. Also, the crew know the best spots for diving and make sure you get to see the underwater world at its best. The tenders are also top of the range. Not only are they fitted with high-powered motors, but they are also kept exceptionally clean, so when you leave the boat to go clubbing in Ibiza town, for example, you can do so without getting your gorgeous new dress all wet and dirty. Of course, they can also be used for different kinds of water sports such as water skiing or wakeboarding.
